Merrill Was Right: An Exploration of an Enigmatic Character [Spoilers]

What did you think about this adorable Dalish blood mage? In Dragon Age 2, she was often as polarizing as Sera is in Dragon Age: Inquisition. But perhaps the strangest thing about Merrill is the fact that she changes in hindsight.

Spoilers will follow for both Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition!

In Dragon Age 2, almost everyone thinks Merrill is absolutely insane. Not only is she a blood mage in a world where blood mages are feared, but she regularly talks to “demons” claiming that they are harmless spirits. She’s trying to recreate a mirror that could very well be a portal into some unspoken, nameless evil. Her tribe is so against her that they are willing to die to try to stop her. Even Anders, king crazy of the crazies, thinks Merrill has lost the plot.

Hawke can either support Merrill and help her rebuild the Eluvian or smash it. Either way though, Merrill remains mostly convinced that the ancient elven artifact is the only way to save her tribe and restore her people moving into the future. Quite a few people found the character disturbing; she is absolutely convinced that what she is doing is right. And, the fact is that, well…

Merrill Was Right All Along

Merrill was right about almost everything she said. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, we find out through Cole and Solas that spirits can be safe and that they are only twisted into demons if they are forced against their nature. Moreover, Merrill is right about the eluvians; there’s nothing intrinsically harmful about them. They can be corrupted, as we saw in Dragon Age: Origins, but she had already cleared the corruption. We also see for ourselves that blood magic, in itself, isn’t necessarily bad; it can be used to save the day in DA:O and Hawke can become a blood mage him/herself.

Was Merrill Involved With Flemeth or Solas?

It’s possible. We know that Merrill is very respectful to Flemeth and her tribe seems to have had dealings with her in the past. Flemeth or Solas may have directed Merrill towards the Eluvian. In fact, Merrill may have been the one who awoke Solas in the first place — we don’t know how or why he awoke, but we do know that Merrill was trying to open a gateway to the crossroads, that she found the gateway in the “Cave of Pride” and that it was guarded by a Pride demon, all of which is a heck of a lot of Pride.

Here’s something meta to end this article on. Merrill is played by the lead actress of the show Torchwood, which Solas’ voice actor also starred in.
